A burst water line is the single most damaging plumbing failure in residential service. Even at a household pressure of 50-70 PSI, a half-inch opening pushes roughly 25 litres per minute into your home — that's 1,500 litres an hour, and it's the reason a one-hour faster response and an hour faster shut-off is the difference between a dry-out and a gut renovation.
Most Kanata burst-line calls fall into three buckets: a frozen line that has thawed (winter), a Poly B line that has finally given up at a fitting (1985-1997 homes), or a copper line with a pinhole that has progressed to a split (older copper in Glen Cairn, Beaverbrook, and the original Bridlewood streets). Each has a slightly different best-practice repair, and that's what we want to walk you through.

The freeze-thaw failure mode
When water inside a copper or rigid plastic line freezes, the ice exerts pressure on the closed downstream section of the pipe — the failure rarely happens at the freeze point itself. Instead, the ice plug pushes water further down the line where the system can't relieve, and that downstream section is what splits. The split is often a hairline crack that releases very little water while the line is still frozen — you may not see anything during the cold snap. Once the temperature rises and the ice melts, the crack opens, and you've got a serious problem. This is why a frozen pipe that 'thawed without incident' should still be inspected: the failure may not have shown itself yet.
Poly B: the Kanata-specific problem
Polybutylene (Poly B, grey plastic) was widely used in Ontario residential construction between roughly 1985 and 1997. Many Bridlewood, Katimavik, and parts of Beaverbrook two-storey homes from that era have it as the primary supply piping. The material itself is mostly fine; the well-documented failure mode is at the fittings — original acetal fittings react with chlorine in municipal water and slowly become brittle. After 25-35 years of service, they crack. A burst at a Poly B fitting often manifests as a wet ceiling below a second-floor bathroom, with the water tracking along a joist before it shows. The right repair for a single failure is to replace the failed fitting and a short section with PEX using a proper transition. Copper pinholes
Older copper supply lines, particularly thin-wall Type M installed in the 1970s and 80s, can develop pinhole leaks from a combination of water chemistry, flow turbulence at fittings, and the natural corrosion of copper over decades. A pinhole that starts as a slow seep can progress to a split within months. If we find one pinhole, we'll inspect adjacent sections — pinhole failures usually cluster. The repair is either a soldered or ProPress coupling at the pinhole, or a section replacement in PEX if the surrounding copper shows signs of further degradation.
Why we sometimes recommend more than the minimum
If we open a wall and find a single failed fitting on a Poly B branch that supplies four other fixtures upstairs, the minimum repair is the failed fitting. The right repair is often the full branch, because the other fittings on that same run are the same age, same water chemistry, and same fatigue. We will always quote both options, explain why we're recommending what we're recommending, and let you choose. Sometimes the budget is what it is and you take the minimum — that's a valid decision, and we'll document the rest so you can plan for it.
What we leave behind
When the repair is done and the wall is ready to close, we leave: a labelled photo of the joint location inside the cavity (we tape an index card to the stud with the date and our name), a written summary of what failed and what was installed, and the original failed section if you want it for your insurance file. Drywall close-up is usually a separate trade — we can recommend the same-day drywall contractors we work with regularly, or you can use your own.

What affects the price
Pipe location
An exposed basement run is the most affordable. A line behind a finished ceiling or inside a tiled bathroom wall is substantially more access work.
Pipe material
Copper repairs require solder work and longer pressure-down times. PEX is faster. Poly B sections often require a longer run replacement because the material is brittle.
Extent of damage
A single split versus a multi-foot run that's been weakened by repeated freezing are different jobs.

Burst-line repairs are completed under Ontario Building Code Part 7. Any work in a wall cavity is followed by photo documentation of the joint before drywall is closed — your insurer and any future buyer will want to see it. We also note the location on a small label inside an accessible nearby panel.
A push-to-connect coupling can buy you a few hours in a true emergency if you have one on hand and the failed section is straight, clean copper or PEX. Beyond that, burst-line repair is one of the worst DIY targets in residential plumbing — a joint that looks fine and then fails behind a finished wall causes more damage than the original burst.
