A shower valve is the part of the shower behind the tile — the cartridge body that mixes hot and cold and routes water to the showerhead, hand-held, or tub spout. The trim kit is the part you see: the handle, the escutcheon plate, and the visible parts of the spout and showerhead.
Most shower valve service calls are cartridge replacements — a $90 part that fixes a drip, restores temperature stability, and takes about an hour. Full valve body replacements are less common but sometimes required, particularly when upgrading to a thermostatic valve or when the original body has corroded.

Pressure-balancing vs thermostatic valves
Pressure-balancing valves react to pressure changes (someone flushing a toilet downstream) by adjusting the mix to keep temperature stable — they're the standard residential valve and they work well. Thermostatic valves are a step up: they include a temperature sensor that holds the output to a set temperature regardless of incoming water temperature. They're more expensive but offer a more luxurious shower experience and are common in higher-end bathroom renovations. Either type meets OBC anti-scald requirements.
Access without breaking tile
The single most expensive part of shower valve work is access. If we have to cut a tile wall to reach the valve, the repair to the tile (sourcing matching tile, having a tile setter on-site, grouting and curing) often exceeds the plumbing work itself. Our first approach is always to look for a non-tile access path: an existing access panel, the back of an adjacent closet, the basement ceiling below if the valve is on the first floor. We can almost always find a route that doesn't touch the tile. When we can't, we tell you upfront so you can decide.
Anti-scald calibration
OBC requires pressure-balancing and thermostatic shower valves to be set so that the maximum output temperature is no higher than 49°C. Many valves come from the factory at a default that's too hot. We calibrate the rotational limit stop on every install and every cartridge replacement. It's a 30-second job that prevents real injuries — particularly in households with young children or older adults.
Trim upgrades without valve work
If your existing valve is a current Moen, Delta, or Kohler, you can change just the trim kit (the visible parts) without touching the valve body — letting you upgrade from chrome to brushed nickel or matte black for a fraction of a full bathroom renovation. This is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost bathroom upgrades available.

Full valve replacement vs cartridge
Cartridge replacement is the cheap fix and works 80% of the time. Full valve body replacement is needed when the body has corroded or when you're upgrading to a thermostatic or pressure-balancing valve.

Older homes occasionally have heritage valves where a cartridge replacement may not be possible — in those cases, a full valve body upgrade to a current model is recommended.

Ontario Building Code requires shower valves to be pressure-balancing or thermostatic to prevent scalding. Every install or replacement we do verifies and sets the anti-scald limit per code. Lead-free brass on all wetted parts.
Cartridge replacement is genuinely DIY-friendly if you can identify your valve, find the right cartridge, and shut off the water at the local stop or the main. Trim swaps are also reasonable. Full valve body replacement involves cutting copper or PEX inside a wall — that's not a great DIY target.
