A fridge water line is a small job that, done wrong, causes one of the most expensive slow leaks in a home — water dripping into a kitchen floor cavity for months before anyone notices. The signs are subtle: a slightly warped hardwood board, a stain on the basement ceiling under the kitchen, an ice maker that takes too long to fill. By the time you see them, the subfloor is often gone.
Done right, a fridge water line is a 90-minute job that runs without trouble for the life of the fridge. Done with a saddle valve and bare poly tubing, it's a future insurance claim.

Why we won't install a saddle valve
A saddle valve is a small fitting that clamps around a copper or PEX water line and uses a needle to pierce the pipe wall, with a small valve to control the water flow. They are sold in every big-box store as the 'easy' way to add a fridge water line. They are also the single most common cause of slow under-sink leaks in residential service. The needle seal is rubber, the clamp loosens with thermal cycling, and the puncture point is a permanent weakness in the supply line. Ontario Building Code Part 7 does not permit saddle valves for new installations, and we won't install one even if asked. The right answer is a proper tee fitting in the supply line, a quarter-turn ball valve as the dedicated fridge shut-off, and a braided stainless line to the fridge. It takes 30 extra minutes and lasts decades.
Route planning
The route the water line takes from your shut-off to the fridge determines how reliable and how serviceable it will be. Our default route is: tap into the cold supply at the kitchen sink (under the sink or at the riser in the basement directly below), down through the floor or back through the cabinet kick-space, along the basement ceiling, up through the floor behind or beside the fridge. We secure the line every two feet, leave a generous service loop at the fridge, and label the shut-off valve. The line is concealed everywhere except the last six feet behind the fridge, which is the inspection-friendly zone where 99% of leaks would first show.
Pressure, kinking, and the filter
Most refrigerator manufacturers spec a supply pressure between 20 and 120 PSI — Kanata municipal pressure is typically 50-70 PSI, well within range. The bigger risk is kinking: a too-tight bend in the supply line at the back of the fridge reduces flow, slows ice production, and creates a high-stress point. A two-foot service loop solves this. The in-fridge filter should be changed every six months per the manufacturer; a clogged filter doesn't cause a leak but it does cause the ice maker to underperform.

We pick the route — through the basement ceiling, behind cabinetry, or along the kick-space — to minimize visible tubing and protect from accidental damage.

No saddle valves. We install a real quarter-turn ball valve with a tee on a code-compliant copper or PEX line.

Run the supply
Braided stainless or PEX tubing rated for ice maker service, secured every two feet, with a service loop behind the fridge.

Connect and test
Connect to the fridge, run the dispenser, fill the ice maker, watch for 20 minutes for any sign of seep at the joints.

Newer Richcraft Trails and Fairwinds builds often have a rough-in already capped behind the fridge — if so, we use it. Saddle valves (the small piercing valves that clamp onto a copper line and self-tap) are not permitted under Ontario Building Code Part 7 for new installations and are the single most common source of slow leaks that go undetected for months.
