How a well system works
A submersible pump down the well pushes water up the well pipe and into a pressure tank in the house. The pressure tank holds 6-15 gallons of water under pressure (typically 30-50 PSI or 40-60 PSI cut-on/cut-off). When you open a tap, water flows from the tank, the pressure drops, and at the cut-on pressure the pump kicks on to refill. When pressure reaches cut-off, the pump shuts off. The pressure switch is the small device that senses pressure and turns the pump on and off.
Common failure modes
Pulsing pressure or rapid cycling almost always means a waterlogged pressure tank — the bladder has failed and there's no air cushion left, so the pump cycles on and off every few seconds when water is flowing. A new tank fixes it. No water at all usually means either the pump has failed or the pressure switch has failed; checking the switch is fast (it's the small grey box near the tank). Air spitting out of taps usually means the pump has lost prime (rare on a submersible, common on a jet pump) or the well has temporarily dropped below the pump intake. Sandy water means the pump intake screen has failed or the well has filled with sediment — both need a service call.
Water quality on a well
Rural wells in the Kanata area typically have moderate to high hardness, often elevated iron and manganese, and occasionally sulphate or hydrogen sulfide. A standard treatment train for a typical Kanata-area well is: sediment filter (5-micron pleated), iron/manganese filter or water softener depending on levels, UV disinfection (recommended for any private well), and an optional reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink for drinking. Annual water testing is recommended for any private well — the City does not test private wells, you'll need a private lab.

Well pump work involves 240V power and pressurized water. We isolate at the breaker before touching any electrical, and we never pull a submersible pump without confirming the well casing is sound and the bracing is in place. Water quality verification follows Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidance.
Some homeowners do their own pressure switch replacements (a $30 part, 30 minutes if you know what you're doing). Pump replacement on a submersible is not a DIY job — pulling 150 feet of pipe and wire safely, with a pump on the end, requires equipment most homeowners don't have.
